What is a cataract ?
A cataract is the eye’s own naturally clear lens which has clouded, usually with age. As the lens clouds, vision becomes blurry. A cataract can also form from injury to the eye, medications, or long-term exposure to sunlight. Cataracts can be removed when you decide that your vision has become blurry enough to interfere in your normal daily activities.
Think of your eye as a camera. Your eye has two lenses, one on the surface (known as the cornea), and one within your eye (known as the crystalline lens). These two lenses focus images inside the back of your eye on the retina.
As you begin to age, the crystalline lens begins to harden and become cloudy, which is defined as a cataract. When this happens, it begins to interfere with the quality of your vision.
Some symptoms of cataracts can include blurry vision, bright colors becoming dull, double vision, sensitivity to light and glare, and having difficulties seeing at night. If you wear eye glasses, it may seem that your glasses are not helping you focus as well as they used to.
